Ideas for December

  • Have a good tidy of the shed. It’s clichéd, but it’s a good way to spend some “outdoor” time inside. And if you find you’re missing some vital equipment you could always add it to the Xmas list.

  • Move plants – if the ground isn’t frozen, this is a good time to move ferns. You can also get away with moving and dividing other dormant plants, like hostas or sedums.

  • Check regularly on tubers and plants you are overwintering. Look for any sign of rot on tubers and remove parts which have gone wet and soft. Remember overwintered tender plants generally like to sit dry.

  • Winter sun holidays are exciting – it is a chance to see the variety of flora in different climates too. If you are heading to a warmer destination for a holiday, make sure you look at the plants around you, or visit a garden. I’ve been in Kerala, India and you can read more about this by clicking here.
