Ideas For March
Hold off pruning and planting out tender plants until the frosts have passed. The weather in Winter overall may have been quite warm, but we are still due cold weather and frost.
Start mowing. The warmer weather makes the grass grow. If you haven’t had your mower serviced, why not get that done before you start mowing. Your machine will last longer. Don’t mow a frozen or waterlogged lawn though, it will damage the grass.
Deadhead hydrangeas. Many common types of hydrangea (mophead and lacecap) flower on old wood, so you don’t want to cut them to the ground. Just chop off the old flower heads to the next strong bud on the stem.
Start putting in plant supports for your herbaceous plants – or weave attractive shapes from hazel or willow stakes to add interest to your borders before the flowers come.
